Richard McGrath and Lewis Bronze of Espresso meet Stephen Twigg MP at the Citizenship launch.Recognised for its quality and innovation, Espresso Education has agreed a sponsorship package with the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) to assist the introduction of the first year of the Citizenship curriculum. As part of the agreement, Espresso will be sending secondary schools in England a CD-ROM enabling teachers and pupils to use its unique Citizenship resources at absolutely no cost.

The Espresso CD-ROM contains resources to teach 13 out of the 15 programmes of study for Citizenship. It will be made available to Heads of Citizenship in all maintained schools in England in the week of September 23rd, and will be presented at the official launch of 'Citizenship in the National Curriculum' on Friday 27th September, which will be attended by the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Young People and Learning, Stephen Twigg.

Citizenship Starter PackThe CD-ROM contains eight resource banks of eye-catching Citizenship content, including modules on Global Warming, Parliament, Diet, Body Image, Helping the Homeless, Vaccination, Human Rights Laws and Animal Welfare. The free CD-ROM will be accompanied by user instructions and full curriculum linkage and notes. The resources will be exactly the same as those found on the standard Espresso subscription service which covers other areas of the curriculum and updates monthly. The Espresso activities within Citizenship are designed to encourage the development of communication skills and opinions on a wide range of topical issues and to stimulating debate with others.

Usually updated on a monthly basis, Espresso can adapt to the topical nature of Citizenship. Its vast range of engaging material presented in a range of media is based around DfES schemes of work.

Citizenship became a statutory National Curriculum requirement on 1st August 2002 for Key Stages 3 and 4. It is complemented by the framework for PSHE at Key Stages 3 and 4 and will help empower students to participate effectively in society, encourage schools to relate positively to their neighbourhood and local communities and help produce an active and politically literate population, capable of becoming involved in local and national affairs.

Joanne Abbey, Producer of PSHE and Citizenship, Espresso Education, said:

We have built stimulating and challenging resources for a brand new subject, and I hope our CD-ROM really helps the delivery of Citizenship by saving teachers time and inspiring students. We see this as an exciting opportunity to contribute to the development of Citizenship education nationally.

Lewis Bronze, CEO, Espresso Education, said:

We are delighted that the quality and uniqueness of Espresso's citizenship resources is being recognised by the Department for Education and Skills in this sponsorship arrangement for the first year of the Citizenship Curriculum. We hope that our sponsorship will benefit every secondary school in the country.
