BETT 2005 - Espresso continues its journey "across the curriculum" with new content launchedBETT 2005

STAND NUMBER D64

17th November 2004

Espresso just gets bigger and better with each passing BETT! Visitors to BETT 2005 will see that the Espresso service offers a unique way of motivating both teachers and learners, and for delivering top-quality lessons with ICT embedded throughout the curriculum.

As the only video-rich cross-curricular online service, Espresso specializes in producing materials which cover traditionally “under-resourced” and “hard-to-resource” areas of the curriculum. Espresso’s huge library of material has stunning, motivating resources for Art, Design & Technology, Music and the Humanities in addition to a massive archive of resources for core subjects.

Espresso covers these areas with its unique use of video clips as the building blocks for a host of interactive teaching and multimedia learning resources. Wrapped into easy-to-implement learning modules, Espresso’s resources are all tightly aligned to QCA Schemes of Work and National Frameworks.

Building on its two Awards at BETT 2004, Espresso has plenty of new material for BETT 2005:

FRENCH FOR PRIMARY

Espresso introduces a new MFL service for primary pupils with “Allez! Unit 1” and “En famille, Unit 2.” Stealing a march on the new requirement for schools to provide MFL teaching to all Key Stage 2 pupils, Espresso's Primary French service prepares schools for this initiative. The modules give access to authentic accents as video clips, audio clips and interactive activities feature native French speakers. More modules will be added throughout the year and will build into a complete language course for primary schools.

GEOGRAPHY

Espresso’s new Local Study module is designed to provide teachers with a guide for carrying out a geographical study in their local area. In addition to a practical “template”, this module also includes numerous examples of how teachers can integrate ICT into their local study to further enhance lesson plans. Built in close partnership with Wolverhampton LA, this highly-motivating module features local history and geography experts who provide unique perspectives on the importance and value of the types of study they conduct.

MATHS

Espresso goes “back to the basics” with its new Time module for Key Stage 1. Through video, children witness examples of units of time being used as a measurement for a variety of different purposes, in a number of familiar contexts. The videos and supporting material explore units of time using analogue and digital clocks, calendars, morning and afternoon, days of the week and months of the year.

PSHE & CITIZENSHIP

In another new departure, Espresso addresses the often difficult transition that pupils must make from primary to secondary school with Transition. Through a series of interviews, Espresso talks to children at the end of Year 6 and again at the beginning of Year 7, to find out about their feelings and experiences of finishing primary school and moving to secondary and the challenges of a new curriculum and school environment. These interviews will enlighten Key Stage 2 pupils with experience they can both relate to and learn from, introducing an important peer element to the teaching process,

PERSONALIZED LEARNING

Espresso introduces additional Learning Paths to its service and adds new Learning Reviews. Learning Paths, applied to subjects throughout the Service, support personalized learning by offering students an adaptable, easy-to-follow, step-by-step outline of specific tasks that they complete by referring to a range of resources within the Espresso service. Learning Reviews are self-assessments to encourage children to engage in their own knowledge and understanding of particular content, including tools to assist in validating their judgments.

TEACHER SUPPORT

To all teachers, community and collaboration are vital parts of the whole teaching experience. Based on specific teacher feedback, Espresso has developed Espresso Community to enhance its online Staffroom. This is designed for teachers to share ideas about the effective use of Espresso. It also contains the first in a series of Espresso best practice videos, focusing on the use of Espresso with interactive whiteboards.
